Actually this method has been used for over a year already. I am surprised why I could not find another hacker posting this. Anyway, I assume I invented this. To crack it, it is so easy. It works on Mac 10.6.8. I know the steps below are quite hard. If you can wait, i will make a program to run that automatically. =]

[sourcecode]
download and install mbox mail for mac 1.0.2 from fluentfactory.com
add "127.0.0.1 secure.mfluent.com" to /etc/host
open /library/preference/com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist
edit value of LicenseTrialDays to 3650
open /Library/Application Support/FluentFactory/mBoxMail/mbox.dat with any Sqlite3 manager
edit value of table->properties->c_date to many years later like 2050
finished and enjoy!

  1. I do not follow the 2nd and 3rd step. What does “to/etc/host” mean? And how do you get to your first screenshot what program is that?

    1. open the hosts file in Terminal (you can search for terminal in spotlight on Mac)
Once open, type in: sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
It might ask for a password if you have a password set on your mac
Once it is open, add the following site to the bottom of the host file

      127.0.0.1 secure.mfluent.com

Once you have added that, save the file by pressing CONTROL + O
Now move to step 3 in the instructions.

  2. im on lion
i made a duplicate and replace the hosts file
however the plist doesnt have the trial day entry on it, or at least i cant see it on lion
    help please?

    1. edit: got the plist to show the trail day left and i changed that, but the .dat is a “readonly db” and wont let me edit. do u have any sqlite managers you can suggest?
or does the crack not work for lion….
(pretty desperate as i have lost all my emails in one of my failed attempts…i wouldnt want the effect to be in vain)

      1. I’ve actually figured this out a while ago as well while playing around with the program.

But anyways it works on Lion, for a SQLite Database Browser (free) go to:

        http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlitebrowser/

Once you download it, copy the the .dat file to your desktop and open it in the program. Once open go to the “browse data” tab and you’ll see c_date row. Just edit that like that instructions say. Save the file, and replace it with the one in

        Library/Application Support/FluentFactory/mBoxMail/mbox.dat

  3. Hi Nicholas,
I’m using OS X Lion, and have followed all your steps, but I keep getting told by Mbox Mail that my trial has expired, even though I have only just installed the program? When I open the preferencepanel item, it says Connection fail. What do I do?

  4. You are great. Thanks so much for the help and finally i got the Mac mail working for hotmail account.

  5. i have no plist file and no folder in the application suppert folder of mbox i’m on lion and german sorry for my english

  6. okay a better tutorial (sorry for my enlish)
    step:1 install mbox mail
step:2 open the options of mbox
step:3 the tool loads the 30 days trial
    step:4 edit the host file

    step:9 Configure your email accounts
    step:10 have fun!

FOR LION After installing install the lion fix!!!
    abd then follow the tutorial!

  7. Where is the open /library/preference/com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist file?
    I only found /library/preference/com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.DE29F2DB-“and so on”.plist
Where can I edit value of LicenseTrialDays to 3650?

    Please help me.

    thx.

  8. If I open com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.DE29F2DB-”and so on”.plist the content is:

    bplist00-_UpdateRemindTimestamp_2011-08-29T16:56:39MESZ
    #

    1. download the tool plistedit pro!
      install it!
you find the .plist on your hard drive on the desktop klick on your macintosh HD and there on library and there in preferences!

      1. Thank you very much. It works now.
Like the instructions tell I downloaded mbox mail 1.0.2.
My last question is if this only works with mbox mail 1.0.2 or also with the newest version 1.0.6?
Can I download version 1.0.6 an the cracking procedure works also?
Or is it possible to update directly the cracked program?
If it is possible can you explain me how cause the update button isn’t there after these procedure.

        Thanks

      2. i can say only this!
test it with the upgrade but!
uninstall the tool of version 1.0.2 and delete the plists and do not upgrade over the tool and when its not work remove 1.0.6 and install 1.0.2

  9. and i think they upgrade is only a upgrade to lion and i think they used the lion fix from this blog 😀
but xy say us when version 1.0.6 work thanks

  10. tell me ho I can delete with plistedit pro the “com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist” file and I will test it

  11. I tested it with mbox mail 1.0.6.
This crack method works also with 1.0.6. !
I used the description of alex.

Thanks to nicholas and especially to alex for your fast answers and help.

  12. good news!
for everyone who cracked with my method Download: mBox Mail for Mac And install 1.0.6 (when you have installed 1.0.2) the crack works after Upgrade!!!! but don’t use the in App upgrade!

  13. Hi Alex!
When I open the .plist this is what I got.
    bplist00‘YAutoStartZAutoUpdateTPort]LocalhostOnlyQ0Q1T9143&+9;=B
where should I include the 999999999999999?

    Thanks!

  14. Alex,
I am sorry I did all the steps but I just couldn’t do it.
I don’t know if I am doing the editing in the wrong place.
    Can I get some pics?

    Thanks!!

  15. My plist-File now looks like this: No more cracking possible 🙁
Do you have a workaround for this?
    THANK YOU!

    Port
    9143

  16. This doesn’t work any more. It worked fine, but now it shows ” Connection failed”. How do we fix it?

  17. I got it to work thanks Nicholas and Alex (iam from sweden so excuse my english)
The only thing i had a problem with was changing the host file in lion 10.7.2
My solution was a program called gasmask http://code.google.com/p/gmask/ , it was supper easy to use and free.
plistedit pro was also really easy to use thanks Alex

So here are the steps i used (most of them are from Nicholas/Alex i will just change a couple of things to make it easier)

    1 download/install mbox 1.0.6

2 open mbox mail settings (this is needed get the 30day trial plist to show)

    3 Quit mbox

4 download/install gasmask (this is what i used to change the host file no need to use the terminal)

5 open gasmask and you will see all the text from your host file now you enter 127.0.0.1 secure.mfluent.com at the bottom of the list and hit save (you might be asked for your password if you have one) and thats it your host file has been fixed.

    6 reboot your computer

    7 download/install free plistedit pro http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/plisteditpro/
(this is used to change the trial from 30 days to 999999999999 days as shown on Alex screen shoot http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1342/bildschirmfoto20110831u.png )

8 Locate the plist file /library/preference/com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist and open the plist file using plistedit pro and change the days to 999999999999 like on the screen shot from Alex

9 Now you can get going with mbox for another 9999999999999 days

  18. it still tells me connection failed..please help me with that…using lion 10.7.2 (the mail pic is flashing and sometimes it has an exclamation mark and sometimes it disappears )

    1. OKAY! delete all files…..delete the hosts enry…..rebooot …..install……run the software…..when its in trial mode……edit hosts…..reboot…..edit plist

      1. i deleted all files…deleted hosts, did everything you said but still got the exclamation mark and it tells me i got 999999 days left and beneath it says trial mode expired…the mail app still doesn’t sync…
        please help me with that…

      2. hey, i’m sorry but this fix still doesn’t work for me…
it tells me only 7 days left…
        any thoughts?
        thanks

  19. sorry but i have a new mbp an now ive installed it new and it works for me ! have you editet the hostfile? or install littlesnitch and block the app

  20. i’ve edited the host file, installed little snitch (and blocked some programs) but none of those two had to do with mboxmail…could you please explain me how to restart from 0 and how to delete every single file that has to do with mboxmail so i could start a from beginning and try it all over again…?

  21. could you please tell me how to start again from 0 and how to delete every file that has to do with mboxmail?
    thanks

  22. I have very limited developer skills and I was able to follow the directions of Nicholas, but mostly those of Alex, to accomplish this. Thank you for the detailed instructions in extending the duration of my free trial!

  23. I can’t make it work… i formatted my mac and now it doesnt work… any help? I’m on Lion.. and when i edit the plist it only appears the licensetrial part…

      1. Great fix. I can add that you shouldn’t even have to worry about rebooting, replace step 5 with:

Crack open a terminal session and simply execute ‘dscacheutil -flush’. That’ll update what we just added to the hosts file. Sorted!

  24. My trial period expired, but I followed the instructions above and managed to change the Trial Status to active and 999999999999 days left before registration is required.

However, when I try to take the Hotmail account online using Mac Mail, there is an error message:

    ===================

    Unable to Connect
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Hotmail” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “localhost” on port 9143 timed out.

    ===================

Does it make a difference whether the trial period has expired (before I do the above)? If so, how can i reset the trial period, or fool the system into thinking that the trial period has not expired?

    Hope someone can help! Thanks!

    1. Delete the .app .plist and the lockfile same folder and name as the plist reedit the hosts delete the entry reboot and then the tutorial again

  25. Sorry to double post (also in the comments for the Lion Fix for Mbox Mail), but I’m wondering if anyone else is having this issue:

I always get duplicate outgoing messages in my Hotmail Sent folder when using Mbox Mail. I don’t have any weird rules or anything. I just always see 2 messages in my Sent folder for every 1 message I send. But in testing it, only one email ultimately goes out. This happens even with a virgin install of Lion running Mail.app with no plugins and only Mbox Mail added into the mix.

I have tried using Mail Act-on, which allows for outgoing mail rules, to try and delete the duplicates, or at least move them to the trash, but that doesn’t work. It does move it to the trash, but still 2 emails are generated in the Sent Folder. The only thing I’ve been able to do is have Mail Act-on Flag the Sent message in blue, I then can easily sort and periodically delete them manually. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

Suggestions on a fix? Feedback appreciated!

  26. I did this to redo my trial period after it locked me out.. I would get TRIAL EXPIRED in the MBOX icon at the top of the screen, but the System Preferences would say Trial Active with 3650 days remaining (as I edited the plist / mbox.dat).
I was uninstalling and reinstalling and it still told me trial expired even after copying new plist/dat files over. I fixed mine with the solution from: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=13043428&postcount=45

    Basically:

The preference pane does not seem to be able to write to the appropriate file. try the following:

    1. Stop and quit mBox
    2. Open Terminal
    3. cd /Library/Preferences
    4. sudo chmod 777 .
    5. sudo chmod 777 com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist
    6. Go to System Preferences and reregister. Quit and reenter to verify registration is persisted *
    7. Return to Terminal and make sure you;re in /Library/Preferences
    8. sudo chmod 755 .
    9. sudo chmod 644 com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist

    Hope that helps some people.

  27. Another one who succeed!
    Thank you all!

It is very important to follow exactly the instructions given above. Firstly, I had some problems (Hotmail couldn’t connect bu no error message was given) but after restar mbox again, everything started to work flawlessly!

    Thanks again!

    1. Ok, things didn’t finally go so flawlessly…I can receive mail and mbox says I have 9999 days of trial but mu inbox in Mail keeps refreshing constantly…It seems like cannot establish a permanent connection.

      Any suggestion?

      Thanks!

      1. I’ve been trying and trying, and no way…
I’ve even started from scratch with a re-format and Snow Leopard installation…Open preferences, stop mbox, edit plist, edit dat, block hosts…In the end, mbox icon seems ok, mbox preferences say trial in 9999 days but my inbox in Apple’s Mail 4.5 cannot connect…It keeps rounding but mbox icon doesn’t blink as it used to.
        I’d really appreciate any help…
        Thanks.

  28. I have to say I ran mbox mail for a while, I went back to using POP mail for hotmail, and switched most things over to GMAIL. MBox is a slow and clunky solution – if your trying to respond to messages quickly MBOX is too slow with detection of new mail. I’m hoping MS releases something that allows us to use IMAP eventually, but till then i’m moving things over to GMAIL.

    1. Smon, I ran mbox mail for a while as well (with the hack provided here with no problems; great instructions provided) but ended up doing the same thing — moving things over to gmail. Thankfully, gmail allows a 30 day email forwarding feature which allowed me to contact senders and request the change of address to senders. I still periodically check my hotmail address to catch a few I didn’t get to.

  29. I have combined steps from simon and seb and got this. Thanks greatly for both of your help! Hope this post help newbie if you got trial expired problem again.

    7. Stop and quit mBox

    8. Open Terminal

    9. cd /Library/Preferences

    10. sudo chmod 777 .

    11. sudo chmod 777 com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist

    12. download/install free plistedit pro http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/plisteditpro/
(this is used to change the trial from 30 days to 999999999999 days as shown on Alex screen shoot http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1342 … 10831u.png )

    13. Locate the plist file /library/preference/com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist and open the plist file using plistedit pro and change the days to 999999999999 or any number you want

    14. Return to Terminal and make sure you;re in /Library/Preferences

    15. sudo chmod 755 .

    16. sudo chmod 644 com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist

    17. Now you can get going with mbox for another 9999999999999 days

p/s: I want to switch to gmail as well but many of my accounts are linked with hotmail. too lazy to change one by one. gonna stick with it till it does not worth it anymore. haha.

  30. I have combined both seb and simon posts for newbie who got stuck in trial expired again. Thanks for the great post guys!

  31. MarcyBus, I have the same problem as you. Double emails in Sent Folder. Can’t seem to fix it. Were you able to solve this problem?

    Thanks,

  32. i can’t edit the plist file as its locked. this is even after i have done the steps to chmod 777.
    anyone having the same problem?
i’ve even tried the command “chmod +rw com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist”
how do i unlock the file?

  33. I just like the helpful information you provide in your articles. I will bookmark your blog and test again right here regularly. I’m rather certain I will learn many new stuff right right here! Best of luck for the next!

  34. After installing mBoxmail and follow the instructions, I cannot find com.fluentfactory.MboxMail.plist in /library/preference and as well there is no FluentFactory folder in /Library/Application Support/.
the only I can see is: com.mfluentfactory.MboxMailLauncher.plist in /library/preference.
Any ideas what is going on. I appreciate your help.
